Neon CRM Alternative for Growing Nonprofits

By Alex Gomez, Founder, Troppus Group · November 3, 2026 · 5 min read

The best Neon CRM alternative depends on why you're leaving. If cost is the issue, a simpler donor tool like Little Green Light may fit. If you want a donor-retention focus, look at Bloomerang. If you've outgrown a donor-focused tool because you track programs, cases or grants, Salesforce is the one to consider. Neon is still the right choice for many organizations, so start by naming the problem.

We work in Salesforce, so we'll say where we think it fits and where it doesn't.

What Neon CRM does well

Neon One's pricing page (checked November 2026) lists these in its starting plan, from $99 per month:

  • Supporter profiles, reporting and dashboards, automated workflows and grant management
  • Campaigns and forms, peer-to-peer, recurring gifts and payment processing
  • Email marketing, text messaging, stewardship journeys and a donor portal
  • Live chat, email and phone support

Neon says pricing is based on your organization's revenue, not record counts, and that there are no record caps. That's a real advantage if you have a large database but modest revenue. The page doesn't publish the higher tiers, so ask for a quote.

If that list covers what you need, you may not need an alternative. A move costs time, and a CRM you know is worth something.

Common reasons to look elsewhere

You're paying more than your needs justify. Revenue-based pricing rises as you grow. Record-based tools price differently, and for some organizations that comes out cheaper.

You need more than donors. If staff are tracking program participants, case notes or complex grant requirements somewhere else, you may want one system.

Reporting or integrations feel limited. Every tool has limits. Name the report or connection you can't get, then ask each vendor to show you.

You want more control over data and access. If you handle sensitive client or health information, you may need fine-grained permissions.

Your team has changed. Sometimes the tool is fine and the setup is the problem. Fixing configuration is cheaper than switching.

The alternatives, fairly compared

Option Best for Pricing model
Little Green Light Small teams that want simple, low-cost donor tracking By constituent records; $45 per month for up to 2,500 per its help page, last updated 2023
Bloomerang Donor engagement and retention, with unlimited users CRM from $125 per month billed annually, on its pricing page; based on records
Salesforce Programs, cases, grants and sensitive data alongside donors Per user; 10 free licenses for eligible nonprofits

When Salesforce is a better fit than Neon

Salesforce tends to win when you track more than gifts and need to shape the system around your programs. It also offers eligible nonprofits 10 free licenses, though setup, extra users and support cost money. We cover that in is Salesforce free for nonprofits.

When Salesforce is not a better fit

If one or two people run fundraising and nobody owns systems, a packaged tool is usually easier. Neon, Bloomerang and Little Green Light are all designed for that.

Before you switch: a checklist

  1. Write down what's not working. Be specific: a report, a fee, a missing integration.
  2. Check whether it can be fixed in your current setup. Many problems are configuration, not product.
  3. Export your data and look at it. Is it clean enough to move? Duplicates and gaps will follow you.
  4. List your integrations. Forms, payments, email, accounting. Each needs a plan.
  5. Ask for a trial or demo with your own data sample.
  6. Pick a quiet time. Avoid year-end giving.
  7. Confirm export terms. Check how you would leave any new tool, too.

What about your reporting while you switch?

A move can leave your board without reliable numbers for a while. Keep a snapshot of your key reports, such as giving by year and campaign, before you switch, so you can check the new system against it.

If you're on Bloomerang or Donorbox and mainly want better reports and automation without changing CRMs, our Nonprofit Ops Platform may be worth a look. It sits on top of the CRM you already use.

What to compare side by side

When you ask vendors for a demo, use the same script for each so you can compare fairly:

  • Record a gift, a recurring gift and a soft credit. See how many clicks and what the record looks like afterward.
  • Run your three most important reports. Ask them to build them live with sample data.
  • Show the integration with your payment processor and email tool. Ask whether the sync goes one way or both.
  • Show what a staff user can and can't see. Permissions matter if you hold sensitive data.
  • Show the export. Ask what you get if you leave.
  • Get the total price in writing. Include onboarding, add-on modules, text messaging and support.

A note on staying

Many organizations that think about leaving a CRM find that their frustration comes from a setup nobody has reviewed in years: duplicate records, unused fields, reports no one trusts. A cleanup can make the current tool feel new. If you're not sure which camp you're in, ask someone outside your team to review it before you commit to a migration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest alternative to Neon CRM?

Little Green Light publishes low entry pricing for small databases. The cheapest option depends on your record count, revenue and features, so compare quotes for your own numbers.

Is Salesforce better than Neon CRM?

Not universally. Salesforce is more configurable and handles programs and cases well, but it takes more setup. Neon is more packaged for fundraising. Choose by what you need to track.

How hard is it to migrate from Neon CRM?

It depends on how much data and customization you have. Plan on cleaning records, mapping fields, rebuilding reports, and reconnecting forms and payments.

Can I keep my data if I leave Neon?

Ask Neon One about export options before you commit to leaving, and test an export early.
